“I've never shared MRR before, but here it goes: cursor.directory, a 3-hour hack that now makes $35k/month”
Editor's note: Pontus Abrahamsson and Viktor Hofte built the site after Pontus called Viktor from an airport; in the Starter Story interview (Nov 16, 2025) they say 'we of course use cursor to code', with Next.js, Vercel and shadcn, and that they spend about three hours a month on it. The interview repeats the X figure (about $34,000 to $35,000 a month) but shows no dashboard, so this stays self-reported. Pontus is an experienced developer with a large audience, not a beginner. The site is live as of Oct 19, 2026 ('Extend Cursor with community plugins', 90.9K+ developers); his X bio now says he is building at Ramp, and we did not confirm who runs the directory today. We found no TrustMRR listing.
How they got customers
They posted the site on X the day it was built and it took off; Pontus already had a large developer audience there. Every rule is open source and merged on GitHub, so the community keeps adding content, which brings search traffic and the sponsors and job posters who pay for listings.
Steps to try
Spot a gap the moment a tool takes off: Cursor users had nowhere to share rules, so they built the directory in about three hours.
From the sourceLaunch the same day on X, where the founder already had a developer audience.
From the sourceMake the content open source on GitHub so the community keeps it growing for free.
From the sourceMonetize the traffic with paid job listings, featured MCPs and ads instead of charging users.
From the sourceKeep the stack serverless and cheap (Next.js, Vercel, Polar) so margins stay near 100%.
From the sourceA directory tied to one tool depends on that tool's popularity; diversify before the platform changes direction.
