“I use Cursor for coding and also sometimes for writing copy”

Denis Yurchak (founder), Starter Story, Oct 16, 2025

Editor's note: Denis Yurchak is a trained diplomat who taught himself to code and moved to Austria. When Microsoft announced it was closing Skype in March 2025 and Pieter Levels tweeted for someone to build an alternative, he built a prototype over a weekend. In the Oct 16, 2025 Starter Story interview he says he built it on Next.js using Cursor and LLMs, but had to fix and tweak a lot of the design by hand, and that he also built his own support-request system and admin panel with Cursor so he can stay solo. He had shipped several side projects before, so this is AI-assisted building by a developer, not a first-time coder.

How they got customers

He launched with screenshots of the web dialer on travel subreddits (where he got blocked fast, but made his first sales minutes after posting), then kept posting on entrepreneur subreddits and X; the first week brought 150 users. After that he targeted "Skype alternative" keywords: he found the authors of articles ranking for them and asked them to mention Yadaphone or swap Skype for it. A business plan, added after one company asked for it, brings bigger, lower-churn customers.

Steps to try

  1. Pick a proven market where the competitors are old and slow; he went after international calling right as Skype announced its shutdown.

  2. Build the MVP fast (he did it in a weekend with Next.js and Cursor) and focus on the one core feature: making an outbound call.

  3. Launch with a clear story and screenshots on Reddit, starting with the subreddits where your users are, then entrepreneur subreddits that allow self-promotion.

  4. When a big competitor leaves, find the articles that still rank for its name and ask their authors to mention you.

  5. Message every paying customer for feedback, and add a business plan early: companies pay more and churn less.
